Parvir Jhajj and Sharone Vernon-Evans are national champs. The duo, members of Mississauga’s Pakmen Volleyball Club, won the U14 beach volleyball national championships this past Sunday in Vancouver. Jhajj and Vernon-Evans breezed through the three-day championships with a 8-0 record. They defeated a team from B.C. 21-8 and 21-13 in the semis and the B.C. provincial champions in three sets in the gold-medal match (21-11, 16-21, 15-6). Coaches Jessy Satti and Phillip Rodrigues travelled with the players and were very pleased with their performance. “Their passing was amazing all weekend and they served extremely tough — that was the main reason for their success,” said Satti. Rodrigues said he was impressed with how hard the boys worked during volleyball practices over the past several weeks. This was the the first year they had played together as a team. “The hard work paid off,” he said. “Parvir utilized his experience from playing last year to help Sharone learn the game quickly. He’s a natural leader.” The win capped off an impressive year for the pair. In May, their indoor volleyball team won the national volleyball championships in Toronto. Both Jhajj and Vernon-Evans play the power position on the indoor team, coached by Ed Turalinski. “Parvir is a non-stop working machine that will not stop until he gets what he wants,” said Vernon-Evans. Jhajj returned the compliment. “My partner played amazing. His passing, setting, and hitting was phenomenal,” he said.
