Mississauga’s Pakmen under-18 boys’ volleyball club went undefeated this past weekend to win the Rochester Can-Am Volleyball Championship in western New York.
The Pakmen lost only one out of 17 sets and defeated Pennsylvania’s Yorktowne Blue in straight sets (25-23) in a closely contested championship final. The Mississauga club redeemed itself after finishing second at the tournament last year.
The Pakmen rolled through the round-robin with straight-set victories over the Academy Volleyball Club, Club Lehigh White, Pittsburgh Black, Panther Volleyball Club and Yorktowne Blue.
In the quarter-finals, the Pakmen defeated MVP Red in straight sets (26-24, 28-26) and followed with a 2-1 semi-final win (25-17, 25-27, 15-8) over defending champions and tournament hosts Pace Bootlegger.
Members of the Pakmen are Ricky Brar, Brandon Koppers, Danny Ly, Gavin Taylor, Alex Stefaniuk, Justin Kong, Chris Adams, Daniel Espinosa, Nathan Murdock, Gabriel Darku, Stefan Vukmanovic and Shaun Lasala.
Kelly Smith is the head coach and Renato Zanchetta, Diem Huyahq and Nenad Djuric are the assistants.
