“A pair of Rick Hansen Secondary School students will join the McMaster University men’s volleyball team next season.
Outside hitter Shayne Herbert, who was recently named the Mississauga’s 2011 male high school athlete of the year, and libero Seyar Karimi, are among five new recruits the Marauders have signed for the 2012-13 Ontario University Athletics season.
McMaster coach Dave Preston believes both Mississauga players will be valuable assets.
“Shayne is capable of playing both left and right side, which gives us some great options,” Preston said.
“Seyar is a natural leader and very fast. Getting the right player in the libero position can dramatically affect the offence, defence and transition game.”
The libber is a defensive specialist who remains in the game at all times. He usually plays the middle blocker position in the back row.
In addition to guiding the Rick Hansen Storm to an appearance in the 2011-12 Peel high school semi-finals, Herbert and Karimi were both part of the Pakmen Volleyball Club’s under-18 tier I team that finished fourth at the national championships last month.”
