This article talks about the 3 specific areas for early recruiting: Camps, Visits and Communication. The article gives insight to coaches, athletes and parents about the do’s and don’ts of early recruiting. This article is a great tool for club directors, coaches, high schools and recruiters to use so they understand the rules of early recruiting. Below is a summary of the 3 grey areas.
Camps
- Camps cannot be used for recruiting purposes
- camps should be general and are meant for any age student-athletes, there should be NO 1-day specialized camps
- No recruiting conversations can happen during th camp, and no individual attention can be given to a student or a small group of students
Visits
- Freshman and Sophomores cannot take an official or unofficial visit.
- They are welcome to take visits to a campus as a regular student as long as there is no specialized attention from school coaches.
- They are welcome to take individual campus tours that are run by the school itself.
- No meetings can be arranged by a coach or athletic department staff.
Communication
- There can be no requests(email, letter, phone conversations) made to club coaches, directors, high schools to pass along recruiting information to students.
- General camp flyers can be the only form of communication sent to freshman and sophomores
- Student athletes can call and speak to college coaches, as long as it is not directed by the coach. Coaches can never return the call or text of any freshman or sophomore athlete, nor ask their perspective coaches to ask athletes to return their call.
