Volleyball Famous Tournaments

Volleyball competitions are divided into two different categories. There are local and international volleyball tournament. If a volleyball team demonstrates good results on local competitions, sooner or later athletes will participate in the international volleyball tournaments.

Among the most popular volleyball tournaments are: Olympic Games, FIVB World Championship, FIVB World Cup, FIVB World Grand Champions Cup, FIVB Volleyball World League, FIVB Volleyball Nations League, NORCECA Championship, Nations League, Pan American Games, Pan American Cup and others.

It’s worth noting that these volleyball competitions bring together some of the best volleyball teams as well as volleyball players from all over the world. Athletes always take these events seriously, try to prepare for the volleyball prestige tournaments in the best possible way and do everything they can to win the competitions.

Today, we’ll tell you briefly about the volleyball famous tournaments. So, you’ll be able to dig deeper into the history of these volleyball events. Also, we’ll tell you what men’s and women’s volleyball teams demonstrate excellent results on these competitions.

Olympic Games

Volleyball became an integral part of the Olympic program in 1964. Since that time both men’s and women’s volleyball teams participate in the tournament.

It’s worth noting that during all these years a lot of gold medals were won by men’s volleyball teams from such countries as the United States (3 Gold medals, 3 Silver medals as well as 4 Bronze medals), Brazil (5 Gold medals, 3 Silver medals as well as 2 Bronze medals) and the former Soviet Union (7 Gold medals, 4 Silver medals as well as 1 Bronze medal).

The situation is quite different with the women’s volleyball teams. The medals were won by the following countries – Cuba (3 Gold medals as well as 1 Bronze medal), China (3 Gold medals, 1 Silver medal as well as 2 Bronze medals), Japan (2 Gold medals, 2 Silver medals as well as 2 Bronze medals), the former Soviet Union (4 Gold medals as well as 2 Silver medals) and Brazil (2 Gold medals as well as 2 Bronze medals).

Despite the fact that volleyball was officially introduced at the Summer Olympics in 1964, it was a demonstration sport at 1924 Summer Olympics that took place in Paris.

FIVB World Championship

The FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship is an international competition that is usually held once in 4 years. The decision to hold the international volleyball competition was taken by the FIVB in 1948. Thus, the first tournament took place in 1949 in Prague.

Teams from different countries participated in the 19 World Championship tournaments. Russia is the only country that participated in all tournaments. As a result, the team from this country managed to win 6 times. The other winners include teams from such countries as Italy, Brazil, Poland, Czech Republic, the US and Germany.

The first FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Championship was played in 1952. The tournament is also hold once in 4 years. The 18 World Championship tournaments were won by the national volleyball teams from Russia, Cuba, Japan, China, the US, Serbia and Italy. Russia managed to win 7 times.

According to the medal statistics, the Soviet Union won 11 medals (6 Gold medals, 2 Silver medals as well as 3 Bronze medals), Brazil has won 6 medals (3 Gold medals as well as 3 Silver medals), Italy won 4 medals (3 Gold medals as well as 1 Silver medal) and Poland won 4 medals (3 Gold medals as well as 1 Silver medal) at the FIVB volleyball men’s world championship.

The medal statistics also shows that the Soviet Union won 8 medals (5 Gold medals, 2 Silver medals as well as 1 Bronze medal), Japan won 7 medals (3 Gold medals, 3 Silver medals as well as 1 Bronze medal) and Cuba won 4 medals (3 Gold medals as well as 1 Silver medal) at the FIVB volleyball women’s world championship.

FIVB World Cup

Men’s as well as women’s volleyball teams participate in the FIVB World Cup. The FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Cup is an international competition that was introduced to the sport of volleyball in 1965. At first, the tournament was held the year after the Olympic Games. It’s interesting to know that no tournament was played in 1973. However, in 1991 the decision was made to hold the competition the year prior to the Olympic Games. The FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Cup is also an international tournament that currently includes 12 teams.

Among the countries that demonstrate excellent results at FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Cup are: Brazil (3 Gold medals as well as 3 Bronze medals), Russia (2 Gold medals as well as 1 Silver medal) and the United States (2 Gold medals as well as 2 Bronze medals).

Among the countries that demonstrate excellent results at FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Cup are: China (5 Gold medals, 1 Silver medal as well as 3 Bronze medals), Cuba (4 Gold medals as well as 2 Silver medals) and Italy (2 Gold medals).

FIVB World Grand Champions Cup

The FIVB World Grand Champions Cup is another international competition for men’s and women’s volleyball teams. The tournament was first played in 1993. Today, the competition takes place every four years. The men’s volleyball team from Brazil was the most successful winner. It managed to win 5 titles. The women’s volleyball team from this country won 2 titles. Japan is the only country that always hosts the tournament.

Brazil has won 5 Gold medals as well as 2 Silver medals; Cuba has won 1 Gold medal, 1 Silver medal as well as 2 Bronze medals and Italy has won 1 Gold medal, 1 Silver medal as well as 2 Bronze medals at the FIVB Men’s World Grand Champions Cup.

Brazil has won 2 Gold medals, 2 Silver medals as well as 1 Bronze medal at the FIVB women’s World Grand Champions Cup. China has won 2 Gold medals, 1 Silver medal as well as 1 Bronze medal at the FIVB women’s World Grand Champions Cup.

FIVB Volleyball World League

The FIVB Volleyball World League is a popular international tournament where men’s volleyball teams participate. The competition was created in 1990 and has been held annually since that time. The women’s teams have their own version of the competition. The tournament is known as the FIVB Volleyball World Grand Prix. However, in 2018 the two competitions were replaced by the Challenger Cup and Nations League.

NORCECA Championship

The NORCECA Men’s Volleyball Championship is a competition for teams from Central America, North America and the Caribbean. The championship was created in 1969 by the North, Central America and Caribbean Volleyball Federation known as NORCECA. The championship is traditionally held every 2 years. The teams from the US and Cuba have been the most successful participants of the championship. The NORCECA Women’s Volleyball Championship is also a tournament for teams from Central America, North America and the Caribbean. Just like the Men’s Volleyball Championship, women’s tournament was introduced in 1969 and is held every 2 years. The teams from Cuba and the US showed the best results.

Pan American Games

The Pan American Games is a great sporting event in North and South America. This event attracts a huge number of athletes that participate in a wide variety of summer sports. The men’s and women’s volleyball teams take part in the tournament as well. In 1955, volleyball was played at the Pan American Games for the first time. Volleyball was played during the second edition of the Pan American Games that took place in Mexico City. It’s become a regular practice since that time.

Pan American Cup

The Men’s Pan American Volleyball Cup is a tournament that has been introduced by NORCECA. Initially, the competition was meant for the teams from the North, Central America and the Carribean only. However, in 2010 CSV teams were invited as well. The women’s volleyball teams have their own tournament known as the Women’s Pan American Volleyball Cup.
